This issue of Earth First! focuses on Dave Foreman’s well-discussed article also entitled “Earth First!,” previously published in the American political magazine The Progressive in October 1981. Foreman discusses how American environmental movements such as Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, Audubon Society, and Wilderness Society took almost identical “middle-of-the-road” positions in most issues. Foreman was once of the opinion that a moderate path would create greater changes in the long run. However, “a major crack in [his] personal moderation appeared early in 1979 (…)” and together with Susan Morgan, Howie Wolke, and Bart Koehler they started a new radical group called EARTH FIRST!.
